Short Breaks Consultation 2

You Said….

Earlier this year Bedford Borough Council and Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum asked local parent carers and children and young people with SEND about community short breaks in Bedford. You told us about the short break activities you currently access, what you like about them, what gaps there are currently and what you would like to see in any newly developed short breaks offer.

The key messages you told us were:

  • There was not enough provision available, and what there is often has long waiting lists
  • Staff training / trust in the service being offered was important to you
  • Many families felt their child did not meet the criteria of what was available, with some feeling as though they required a diagnosis to access certain provisions
  • Families wanted a wider range of activities and clubs to choose from
  • Families liked the inclusive nature of ‘SEND activities’ they had experienced during the Summer of SEND 2021
  • Families liked to have options about ‘family inclusive’ activities and ‘drop and go’ type activities
  • Families wanted to see provision within Bedford Borough and did not want to have to travel out of Bedford Borough.

We listened to this feedback and created the proposals below, which we estimate will result in an additional 80 places available within commissioned short breaks in Bedford Borough every month. We hope to be able to continue to expand the range and offer available through our Short Break Innovation Fund.
