Following feedback that parents/carers wanted to have one place which listed all the training available to them, we are pleased to launch our new monthly training page on the Local Offer.

This page will be regularly updated as we become aware of more training available so do keep coming back to check for updates. Please contact us  if you are aware of any training that you feel should be included on this page

Carers in Beds – How to Sleep Better

1:30pm to 230pm  Tuesday 17th of August  Makaton signing taster: A workshop for staff and parents

Speech, language and communication skills develop in everyday situations throughout the day at home and school. This is a workshop for staff and parents working with children in both Early Years and School Age. Makaton uses speech with signs (gestures) and symbols (pictures) to help people communicate.

By attending this workshop we hope you will:

  • Find out about what Makaton is and who uses it
  • Discover the benefits of using Makaton signing
  • Learn some Makaton signs and symbols 

The course normally cost £25 per person, however as part of the Summer of SEND it is being provided FREE

BLMK SEND eLearning for Parents and Practitioners

Bedford Borough Council and Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum have worked with partners from across Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes to coproduce a set of 3 eLearning modules where you can learn more about SEND and the Childrens and Families Act 2014.

You can access the training through clicking here . You will need to register as a new user to be able to access the training. For many of the registration questions parents can simply answer N/A.

Carers in Bedfordshire

Carers in Beds provide a range of support and training for unpaid carers and can be viewed here.  We have picked up the specific parent carers training events below 


How to Sleep Better 31 August @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

A presentation by our wellbeing practitioner, Caroline Carter, on the importance of sleep, its link with wellbeing and tips on how to sleep better.

For parents/carers of children aged 0 to 5 with additional needs. 

This online workshop gives the opportunity to hear other parents' experiences, learn new strategies and share as much or as little of your story as you wish.

Sleep - It is common for all young children to have sleep issues, but more common for children with additional needs. This webinar will explore some of the issues around sleep and will look at ways of supporting your child, raising awareness of the importance of sleep and the effect on the whole family. Participants will gain a better understanding of sleep processes, why sleep problems may occur and examine possible causes. Group discussions will explore what might help and where to get support.

For parents/carers of children aged 0 to 5 with additional needs. 

* During the disruption of Covid-19, it can be extra challenging to manage the behaviour of your child. This online workshop gives the opportunity to hear other parents' experiences, learn new strategies and share as much or as little of your story as you wish.

Encouraging Positive Behaviour - It is common for some young children to have challenging behaviour. This online workshop will explore some of the issues around behaviour and will look at ways of supporting and encouraging your child. Participants will gain a better understanding of why children behave the way they do and learn ways to handle difficult situations in a calm, stress-free manner. Group discussions will explore what might help and how to get support and help.

It will be held on Zoom, and we will give advice on how to install and use Zoom before the workshop is held.

For parents/carers of children aged 0 to 5 with additional needs. 

* During the disruption of Covid-19, many families may have changes in their financial circumstances. This online workshop will help you to maximise your finances, hear other parents' experiences and share as much or as little of your story as you wish.

Money Matters – This workshop gives an overview of benefits, DLA, Carers Allowance, grants available, discounts on utilities, leisure and discounts for carers. We will also cover accessing services for support with application, local information and helplines and dispelling myths around benefits.

The workshop will be held on Zoom, and we will give advice on how to install and use Zoom before the workshop is held.

* It is very natural to feel overwhelmed about attending a meeting to discuss your child's specialist needs and get the right support for them. You may be finding this even more challenging during the disruption of Covid-19

This workshop will help you to :

• Develop your skills for online and face2face meetings to help you make the right decisions for your child.

• Feel more confident and better able to express yourself in meetings with professionals.

• Understand how to prepare for and how to get the best from a virtual meeting.

• Recognize your strengths when communicating and to remember that you are the expert!
