Shuttleworth Swiss Garden - Coronavirus Update

SHUTTLEWORTH SWISS GARDEN

Our Swiss Garden now open daily 10.00-17.00, with visitor access now extended to our grade 2 listed North Park. Please see the admission prices below. Pay by contactless at the gate or book through our new daily ticketing system.

Explore over 50 acres, with a relaxing walk around a garden full of pretty seasonal colour and three delightful peacocks, and the woodland sculpture trail around a lake that is home to nesting swans and other wildlife.

Observe fantastic views of Shuttleworth House and the surrounding countryside from North Park’s gentle hills, and stroll around the paddocks overlooking the grass airfield. Bring a picnic, relax and unwind.

Dogs on leads are allowed on site, including North Park, but not inside the Swiss Garden.

Adjacent to the aerodrome that houses the Collection, the Swiss Garden is an outstanding example of the Regency fashion for creating landscapes in a picturesque alpine style.

It is a peaceful, tranquil space, and one which has new vistas revealed at every turn. Within the garden are 13 listed structures, an adjacent woodland sculpture trail, and three resident peacocks.

ACCESSIBILITY FOR VISITORS

Shuttleworth aims to be as accessible as possible to visitors. Designated parking for blue badge holders is provided close to the Visitor Centre entrance.  There is level access to the car park into the Shuttleworth Visitor Centre, gift shop and restaurant. Registered assistance dogs  are welcome, wheelchairs can be requested from our Visitor Centre.

THE SWISS GARDEN

Designated parking for blue badge holders is provided close to the Visitor Centre entrance. There is level access from the car park areas to the Shuttleworth Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre provides level access to a Restaurant and the entrance to the Swiss Garden.

Audio guides are available from the Visitor Centre to provide a spoken guide to the Swiss Garden. Necklace Loops are available with the audio guide and these can be used by visitors who use hearing aids.

The pathways in the Swiss Garden are firm and even, with minimal gradients, and most are suitable for access by wheelchair users. A small number of paths in the garden cannot be made accessible to wheelchair users due to the steep contours of the garden, however, where the original garden paths are not accessible to wheelchair users, alternative access routes have been provided. A printed map of the Swiss Garden is available and this shows the alternative access routes. The paths have regular passing places so that wheelchair users can easily pass.

Some Garden features and buildings are preserved in, or restored to, their original state, and consequently may not be directly accessible to wheelchair users and people that are unable to negotiate one or two steps. However, the Grotto and Fernery, and the Garden Room are accessible to all. Seating is provided around the Garden for people who may wish to rest. Volunteer staff are available to provide assistance for people who may require it.

The easy access detour is marked on the map of the Swiss Garden in PDF format. Printed copies are available from the Visitor Centre upon arrival.

THE COLLECTION

The Collection hangars have ramp access between them, suitable for wheelchairs. There are benches provided within the hangars for people who may wish to rest.
