Gadsby Street – Centre for Independent Living
The Centre for Independent Living is a day service which supports adults with learning disabilities to maintain and improve their daily living and independence skills. It is for people who are not reliant on a building base to meet their needs. The service offers opportunities for individuals to progress to more independent lifestyles through activities and by accessing services in and around the town of Bedford. The staff team are qualified in areas such as Autism, Epilepsy Management, Diabetes monitoring and PEG feeding and medication. The team support people to achieve their goals using Gadsby Street as a base. The Centre for Independent Living is a base close to the town centre of Bedford and is accessible from Bedford bus station.
The main aim of the service is for people to develop personal and independent living skills, to support people towards their personal aspirations safely and to ensure inclusive access to the local community in the same way as all other citizens. The service will achieve this by supporting people who would like to become more independent, to learn about personal safety, relationships, the world around them and how to problem solve, to take part in community projects, to work towards gaining work experience, and where possible to work towards employment. The service will also support people to learn to travel independently using public transport from home to Gadsby Street, opening up opportunities to a more rewarding and inclusive lifestyle.
The service supports people who are supported by Adult Services to make greater use of the facilities in and around the town, such as leisure, sport, social, public transport, and community enterprise projects. We also access local sports facilities on a weekly basis such as Kempston Swimming Pool, Bedford Athletic Stadium, Riverside Tennis Club, Mowsbury Golf Course and the Executive Snooker Club.
The Supported Employment Service is also based at Gadsby Street and people are encouraged where possible to aim towards work experience or paid employment. We are able to work closely with the Supported Employment Team in a person centred way to look at which skills require development and support a learning environment to enhance an individuals work readiness in a protected work placement. Many of our attendees have been supported by us to develop Employment Skills and Soft Social Skills and then the Supported Employment Team have been able to secure and support ongoing work placements in the town centre, in schools, nursing homes, Bedford Corn Exchange and Borough Hall. We are currently open from Monday to Friday 8.30 – 4.00 and we are looking for further opportunities to extend these in the future.
