Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Your child’s class teacher is continually monitoring your child’s progress and assessments are carried out each term. If they are concerned that your child is not making progress, they will request a meeting to discuss this with you in more detail.

During the meeting, there will be an opportunity to:
• Share and discuss any concerns you may have.
• Share and discuss any thoughts your child has on their learning.
• Share and discuss the concern the class teacher has.
• Plan any additional support your child may receive.
• Discuss with you any possible referrals to outside professionals to support your child’s learning.
• Give your permission for the school to speak to outside professionals about the concerns they have regarding your child and to request their involvement.

If you have concerns about your child’s progress you should first speak to your child’s class teacher. If you feel that your concerns are being addressed and your child is still not making progress, you and / or your child’s class teacher should speak with the SENDCO. If you feel that you need more support, please speak with the head teacher. If you are still concerned, you can speak to the school’s SEND Governor.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Please contact the school as soon as possible to discuss your child's needs.

School staff will be in touch with pre-schools and nurseries and, where appropriate, the SENDCO and Early Years staff will visit them to discuss how best to support your child.   Where appropriate, the SENDCO will also liaise with other professionals who have been involved with support your child.

Specific visits and transition arrangements can be made in the summer term, to help your child to settle in.

The Foundation Stage teacher will oversee the support for your child and will work with other FS staff to ensure any plans are followed.  Your child's progress will be monitored and you will have termly meetings to discuss this in detail.  The SENDCO will liaise with the FS staff to ensure the support is put in place correctly, and will advise on whether advice from external agencies would be beneficial.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

• Class teachers plan lessons according to the needs of the children in their class. They will ensure that the teaching is adapted to enable your child to access the curriculum as independently as possible.  The planning we develop focuses on retrieval of knowledge so that it is easier for your child to remember and embed their learning.
• Teachers and TAs will work together to adapt tasks to support your child’s learning.
• Where appropriate, specialist advisors can help teachers to adapt their planning to meet the needs of your child.
• The children will work in a variety ways, including individual work (this may be with adult support), small group work (with children of a similar ability or mixed ability) and whole class.
• Specific resources and strategies will be used to support your child, where needed.
• Support is offered during school clubs and trips, including residential trips, to ensure all children are able to access these activities.
• Support may be offered during playtimes and lunchtimes in order to develop social skills, gross motor skills and to encourage children to play appropriately.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

• At Brickhill Primary School, we use a range of different assessments in order to track the progress and attainment of our pupils. This includes both formative and summative assessments which are carried out by the class teacher.
• Your child’s progress is continually monitored by their class teacher through observation, assessment and review.
• If your child has an IEP, the targets will be reviewed each half term, and shared with you at the end of each term in their SEND Progress Report. This will be discussed with you and your child at the beginning of the following term and you will help to set new targets.
• Class teachers record every child’s progress in Reading, Writing and Maths on a termly basis.
• Children in the Foundation Stage are assessed according to the Early Learning Goals. This data is published nationally
• Children in Year 1 sit the Statutory Phonics Test
• Children in Year 2 are formally assessed through the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). These results are published nationally
• Children in Year 6 are formally assessed through the Standard Assessment Tests (SATs). These results are published nationally
• Children in Year 4 are formally assessed through the national Multiplication Check
• The progress of children who have a statement or EHC Plan is formally reviewed at an Annual Review meeting with all adults involved with the child
• All parents will receive a written Annual Report for their child at the end of the academic year
• Regular book scrutinies and lesson observations help to ensure that the needs of all children are met and that they are receiving High Quality Teaching.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We recognise that some children have greater demands on their emotional and social wellbeing. When children are identified by their class teacher or parent with a concern regarding their social and emotional wellbeing, they may be referred to our Pastoral Support TA. This support is offered 1:1 on a needs basis. It may be for a single session, several sessions or once a week for prolonged period.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We work collaboratively with a range of professionals to provide support for individual or groups of children, training for staff and parents and for advice on whole-school approaches.  These include;

• Autism Spectrum Advisory Teachers, Bedford Borough Council
• Bedford Borough SEND Team
• CAMHS (Children and Adult Mental Health Service)
• CHUMS
• Educational Psychology Service
• Mental Health Support Team
• Occupational Therapy
• Ormiston Trust

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Brickhill Primary School is committed to all staff gaining expertise in SEND in order that they may best meet the needs of the SEND children.

Additional training for individual teachers and teaching assistants is made available when necessary, to meet the specific needs of individual pupils.

Our TAs work closely with outside professionals to deliver specialist programmes to specific children.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Where possible, extra support is offered during school clubs and trips, including residential trips, to ensure all children are able to access these activities.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

• The main school is on one level and is therefore accessible to all

• Specialist equipment is provided under the guidance of outside professionals e.g. pencil grips, sloping desks and wobble cushions .

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We recognise that moving on can be difficult for all children but particularly for children with SEND. We aim to ensure that any transition is as smooth as possible.

If your child is joining Brickhill Primary School from another school:
• The SENDCO will visit pre-schools with the Early Years staff where appropriate.
• Your child can visit our school to familiarise themselves with the environment and the adults who will be working with them. Additional sessions can be offered where necessary.
• If your child would benefit from a book or photographs to help them cope with the change, one can be made for them.
• Your child’s new class teacher or the SENDCO will discuss your child’s needs and how best to support them with their previous class teacher.

If your child is moving to another school:
• Your child’s class teacher or the SENDCO will liaise with their new class teacher, or the appropriate staff from the receiving school, to ensure all the information about your child’s needs and how best to support them, are passed on.
• Arrangements may be made for staff from the receiving school to observe or meet your child at Brickhill Primary School.
• Arrangements may be made for your child to have extra visits their new school, if appropriate.

If your child is changing class at Brickhill Primary School:
• A planning meeting will take place in the summer term between their current and new teachers so that relevant information is shared. All SEND documentation will be passed on to their new teacher.
• All children spend a morning with their new class teacher at the end of the summer term. If necessary, additional sessions/visits can be arranged for children with SEND.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

The school budget, received from Bedford Borough, includes money for supporting children with SEND.

The Head Teacher decides on the budget for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in consultation with the school governors

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The Head Teacher and the SENCO discuss all the information they have about SEND pupils in the school. This helps to determine the budget allocated to SEND by identifying what resources/training and support is needed to meet the needs of the pupils with SEND.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

• All parents / carers can have a meeting with the Head teacher or SENDCO prior to their child starting school. This is an opportunity to share any concerns you may have about your child’s needs
• Your child’s class teacher will arrange a meeting each term to discuss your child’s progress and to set new targets. If you have any concerns between these meetings, you can arrange to talk with your child’s teacher or the SENDCO.
• If appropriate, staff may demonstrate strategies that are used in school with your child, so that similar strategies can also be used at home.
• Prior to starting at Brickhill Primary School, parents / carers of a child who already has an EHCP will be invited to a meeting. All professionals who are involved with your child will also be invited in order to share information.
• All parents / carers of children joining Foundation Stage will have a home visit from the class teacher and TA during which you can discuss your child’s strengths and any needs your child may have.
• The SENDCO or Head teacher is available to meet with you to discuss your child’s progress or any concerns or worries you may have.
• All information received from outside professionals will be discussed with you, either by the person involved directly, the SENDCO or your child’s class teacher.
• Homework will be adapted in line with your child’s individual needs
• A home/school book may be used to support communication between you and your child’s class teacher.
• If your child is undergoing Statutory Assessment, the Local Authority SEND Team will support you. They will ensure that you fully understand and contribute to the process.
• The SENDCO can recommend organisations which offer advice and provide support to parents and carers.

The school has a thriving and active Parent Teacher Association which organises a range of fundraising events throughout the year.

We welcome parents and carers who wish to volunteer to help support children; for example helping on school trips, listening to readers and organising small group cooking sessions.
