How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

At Brickhill Primary School, we use a range of different assessments in order to track the progress and attainment of our pupils. This includes both formative and summative assessments which are carried out by the class teacher.

If your child’s class teacher is concerned that your child is not making progress, they will request a meeting to discuss this with you in more detail. If you have concerns about your child’s progress you should first speak to your child’s class teacher.

If you feel that your concerns are not being addressed and feel that your child is still not making progress, you should speak to the SENCO or Head teacher.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The SENDCO will visit pre-schools with the Early Years staff where appropriate. Your child’s new class teacher and the SENDCO will discuss your child’s needs and how best to support them with their previous class teacher or Key Worker.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Class teachers plan lessons according to the specific needs of the individual children in their class. They will ensure that the teaching is adapted to enable your child to access the curriculum as independently as possible.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Your child’s progress is continually monitored by their class teacher through observation, assessment and review. Their progress is reviewed each half term and the data is recorded.

All parents of all children are invited to meet with their child’s class teacher each term to discuss their progress.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We recognise that some children have greater demands on their emotional and social wellbeing. When children are identified by their class teacher or parent with a concern regarding their social and emotional wellbeing, they may be referred to our Pastoral Support TA. This support is offered 1:1 on a needs basis. It may be for a single session, several sessions or once a week for prolonged period.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We have access to a variety of specialist services e.g. An Advisory Teacher for Autism, CHUMS, The Educational Psychology Team, Occupational Therapy, Pediatricians and Speech and Language Therapist.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Brickhill Primary School is committed to all staff gaining expertise in SEND in order that they may best meet the needs of the SEND children.

Additional training for individual teachers and teaching assistants is made available when necessary, to meet the specific needs of individual pupils.

Our TAs work closely with outside professionals to deliver specialist programmes to specific children.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Support is offered during school clubs and trips, including residential trips, to ensure all children are able to access these activities. 

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We recognise that ‘moving on’ can be difficult for all children but particularly for children with SEND. We aim to ensure that any transition is as smooth as possible.

If your child is joining Brickhill Primary School from another school, they will be able to visit our school to familiarise them with the environment and the adults who will be working with them.

If your child is moving to another school, their class teacher and the SENDCO will liaise with the new class teacher or the appropriate staff from the receiving school to ensure all the information about your child’s needs and how best to support them, are passed on.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

The school budget, received from Bedford Borough, includes money for supporting children with SEND.

The Head Teacher decides on the budget for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities in consultation with the school governors

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The Head Teacher and the SENCO discuss all the information they have about SEND pupils in the school. This helps to determine the budget allocated to SEND by identifying what resources/training and support is needed to meet the needs of the pupils with SEND.
