Social distance friendly walks in the chilterns avoiding the most crowded countryside car parks and footpaths.- Great Offley and Charlton walk

The Chilterns Conservation Board and Chiltern Society have developed a series of walks across the Chilterns which are social-distance friendly, avoiding crowded ‘honey-pot’ locations and narrow paths where possible (please be aware there are some short sections of narrow paths on some of the walks). Between 2 and 6 miles long, the walks start in market towns or villages, with good public transport links or parking facilities. Many of the walks are stile-free and most are under 4 miles long, making them accessible to many.

Walks in the Bedfordshire Chilterns

A 6.2 mile stile-free walk through attractive undulating countryside in the northern Chilterns. The walk starts in the village of Great Offley, heading south-west along the ridge above Hitchin before descending to the small hamlet of Charlton. From there, there is a steady, scenic climb back to Offley. You should see red kites and buzzards, and perhaps a sparrow hawk or a hobby, or even a rare bee orchid.

This is one of a series of social-distancing friendly walks, avoiding the most crowded countryside car parks and footpaths. It avoids narrow footpaths wherever possible, but please be aware that there are some short sections of narrow footpath where this is unavoidable. Vegetation also narrows the paths at this time of year, especially where there is a back-log of footpath clearance due to Covid-19.  This is a joint venture between the Chilterns Conservation Board and Chiltern Society and all the walks have been submitted by volunteers. Please note that pubs, cafes, visitor attractions and facilities (including public toilets) might not be open as usual and some will require pre-booking. Please check before setting out. Please remember to follow the Countryside Code
