Whipsnade Zoo Coronavirus Safety Measures - Reopening 31st of December
Following updated government Tier 4 guidance, we are able to safely open London Zoo and Whipsnade Zoo from Thursday 31 December onwards.
We've answered your frequently asked questions on this page.
To help maintain social distancing we have introduced a number of measures to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for all.
Here is how we are keeping our visitors safe:
Everyone must have a pre-booked ticket before visiting - this includes our Members, Fellows and Patrons.
Tickets will be available to book online here. For Members, Fellows and Patrons to get your free tickets, please the instructions provided via email to pre-book your timeslot. The Zoo’s opening hours remain the same, but visitors need to pre-book a timed slot. Morning slots allow entry between 10am-2pm; Afternoon slots allow entry between 2pm - 5pm.The zoo closes at 6pm.
We have limited the number of visitors to the Zoo.
We have strictly limited the number of tickets on sale each day and split them across the various time slots to spread visitors throughout the day.
Keeper talks and animal experiences will not be running.
This is to keep both our visitors and staff safe by avoiding people gathering in groups in one area.
Walk-through exhibits remain closed.
Although many of our indoor spaces are now open again, walkthrough exhibits will stay closed for the time being. As we continue to open up more of the Zoo, face masks may be required in some areas, so please bring one along.
Hullabazoo and the Great Whipsnade Railway are closed.
High-touch areas such as our Hullabazoo playground (inside and outdoors) and steam train will be closed until they can be enjoyed again in a safe way.
Helping our visitors practise social distancing.
We have clearly marked out any areas where queues might occur, like the Zoo entrance, to help everyone maintain a safe 2m distance from one another.
Providing hand sanitised and handwash stations around the Zoo.
At regular stops around the Zoo we have placed hand sanitizer and handwash stations to make sure visitors can frequently wash their hands.
Creating physical barriers.
Barriers have been added in select places around the Zoo where it is more difficult to maintain social distancing, for example at tills.
We are only accepting contactless payments including debit cards, credit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay.
For more information, take a look at our dedicated FAQs page.
Accessibility and Inclusivity
ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is considered reasonably wheelchair friendly.
Free entry for one essential carer and/or free essential car entry into the Zoo is available per paying visitor with additional needs. A child’s ticket must be purchased for any under 3 with additional needs who requires a free essential carer.
There is ramp access to the following areas:
- The Animal Houses.
- Base Camp Restaurant and River Cottage Kitchen & Deli
- The Sealion Arena and Bird Arena to view the displays
- Hullabazoo play areas and Hullabazoo Farm
- First Aid Point (next to the Visitor Centre)
- The steam train (Please note, two wheelchairs can be accommodated on the train per trip)
- Owl Wood - Access may cause wheelchair users some difficulty, as it is covered by bark chippings in order to subdue the noise.
We have a limited number of wheelchairs that are available for hire on a first-come, first-served basis and it is therefore advised to book them in advance of your visit by calling the Retail Shop on 01582 871517 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. A deposit of £25 is required which will be refunded on return of the wheelchair at the end of your visit.
The wheelchairs are non-motorised and are not self-propelling.
It is also possible to hire a mobility scooter, and again we'd recommend booking in advance of your visit. A mobility scooter will cost £20 to hire, plus a refundable deposit of £30.

Assistance dogs are not currently permitted inside ZSL Whipsnade Zoo because we have free-roaming animals such as mara, wallabies, Chinese water deer and muntjac around our Zoo. They use all of the Zoo and therefore we are not able to offer routes to for assistance dogs at present. We are working with Guide Dogs UK to resolve this and hope to be able to welcome dogs to certain areas of the Zoo in the future. We do offer two kennels which are located in a quiet area at the entrance of the Zoo for assistance dogs to stay during your visit. Many dogs may not like being left all day in this new kennel with the smells and sounds of the Zoo so close so please contact our support centre in advance of your visit to make alternative arrangements on 0344 225 1826 or email email@example.com.
