Walk-up entry

Subject to capacity on the day, we will have a limited number of walk-up spaces available. You may need to queue during busy times. The only way to guarantee entry is to book in advance.

Please note, the Museum at Tring will be closed from 10.00-12.00 for SENDsational Mornings at Tring on 12 November. Walk ups will not be permitted at these times. 

 

Neurodiversity

We have a variety of resources and activities to support children and families with neurodiverse conditions.

Our explorer bags have a variety of fidget toys and resources which can be used in the galleries. These are available at the information desk.

Our Learning and Events staff are trained in basic Makaton. If you are taking part in an event, please let our them know if you would like them to use Makaton.

We also have four Makaton-based gallery trails:

• Walter’s world adventures
• I spy...
• Discovering animals
• Colourful birds

The Museum can get very busy during October and February half-terms and on weekends during wet weather. If you would like a quieter visit, we recommend visiting after 14.00 on weekdays or on sunny weekends. 

We run early-morning openings a few times a year from 10.00-12.00 on Sundays. Follow us on Facebook or sign up to our mailing list to find out about dates.

Deaf and hard of hearing visitors 

There are induction loops at the information desk, in the shop, in the Ugly Bug Cafe and in the Rothschild Room. If you need any other assistance during your visit to the Museum, our staff will be happy to help you.useum, our staff will be happy to help you.

Low light levels

Gallery 6 and often Gallery 2 have low light levels to help preserve specimens.

Our historic building has lots of stairs and railings. Please take extra care, especially if visiting with children.

Face covering exemptions

Face coverings must be worn inside the Museum. However, there are several reasons in line with Access and Equality that would mean individuals cannot wear face coverings. Below is a list of face covering exemptions for the Museum:

• Children under the age of 11
• If you have a physical, neurological, mental or emotional condition that means you cannot put on, wear, or remove a face covering
• If putting on, wearing, or removing a face covering would cause you severe distress
• If you are travelling with, or providing assistance to, someone who relies on lip reading to communicate
• If you are entering the Museum to avoid injury or escape the risk of harm, and you do not have a face covering with you
• If you need to remove it while at the Museum to avoid harm or injury or the risk of harm or injury to yourself or others
• If you need to eat, drink, or take medication you can remove your face covering
• If you are asked to remove your face covering by a security officer or other member of staff
• If you require First Aid assistance or need to signal for urgent assistance from staff

Entrances

Entry to the Museum is via the quad entrance on Park Street. The small path from the Dawes Park car park will lead you there. The other entrances are closed.

Safety around the Museum

Our historic building has lots of stairs and railings. Please take extra care, especially if visiting with children.

Lifts

There is lift access to the ground, first-floor and second-floor galleries of the Museum, and to Akeman Street car park. Please use the stairs where possible to ensure lifts are available for those who need them. Lifts are restricted to one household at a time.  

Galleries 1-6 and the unisex toilet are step-free. The shop is on the ground floor but has one step. Staff can provide a ramp on request.

Toilets 

All toilets are open. Please follow social distancing. One household at a time.

There are two sets of male and female toilets. One set is inside the Museum, next to the shop, and the other is outside the Museum, accessed through Akeman Street car park.

There is also an accessible unisex toilet on the ground floor of the Museum.

The Akeman Street and unisex toilets have baby changing facilities.  

Photography and filming

Photography and filming with hand-held cameras or phones for personal use only is permitted in the Museum. Tripods, monopods or additional lighting are not permitted.

Visitors should not take photos or make recordings of other individuals without asking for their permission.

The use of cameras or filming devices for non-private or commercial purposes is prohibited without the prior authorisation of the Museum. Please contact our filming team in advance of your visit.

Parking

There is free car parking in Dawes Park. It has 50 spaces, with three for Blue Badge holders and two parent-and-toddler spaces

The Akeman Street car park is currently closed due to major building works. Two Blue Badge holder spaces are still available.

Alternative car parks are available off the high street. The car parks managed by Dacorum Borough Council are free for the first hour with a small charge thereafter.  

Tickets

To help keep everyone safe, a timed entry system is in place. Only a limited number of people are allowed in our galleries. 

All visitors must book a free ticket in advance online for guaranteed entry. If you're having difficulty booking online, or wish to cancel or rebook your tickets, please contact us. 

Please only book if you're able to attend, or let us know if you can no longer make it so that we can make the tickets available to other visitors.

New tickets are released regularly. There are three time slots available: 10.30-12.00, 13.00-14.30 and 15.00-16.30. The Museum is closed between time slots for cleaning.
