Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We will always let parents know as soon as we know that their child may have a special educational need. After a discussion with their child’s teacher parent(s) are asked to acknowledge that their child has been placed on the Special Educational Needs (SEND) register and they are given a brief description of their additional needs and the level of need Either at:

  • Additional support
  • At Statutory Assessment for An Education and Health Care Plan stage.

The ways in which we identify pupils have special educational needs are:

Before a child starts in the Reception year in the main school: Our Reception (foundation stage) teacher, Mrs Palliser, visits children at home in the summer before they start school to talk to their parent(s) and identifies any concerns they may have. She will then follow up this concern with any identified agencies and Pre-school settings. She also either visits the children at their Pre-school and/or liaises with the Pre-school to gain a full picture of each child’s needs. Those children and families with SEND are given opportunities to come into school with their child for additional taster/transition visits, preliminary joint agency meetings and to meet and work closely with the staff in school prior to the September start.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

We may support pupils with special educational needs and disability by some of the following:

  • Specially prepared learning materials
  • The use of appropriate IT equipment
  • 1:1 or group support from Learning Support Assistants in the classroom
  • Individual and group teaching sessions/support sessions outside the classroom Specialist equipment/resources
  • Signing and assisted communication

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

We gather information every year to help us identify what training is necessary for all staff in school. This will depend on the range of special educational and disability needs experienced by our current and accepted admissions’ pupils and to plan for them to receive the high quality education that all deserve. All school based staff are able to undertake whatever training they need to help them develop their knowledge and skills in the area of Special Educational and Disability Needs.

This training is provided in the following ways:

 Coaching from current staff in school or in the Riversmeet Cluster

 Mentoring from current staff in school or in the Riversmeet Cluster

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?
