Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Where a student has an identified learning difficulty and/or disability the support the college is able to offer is discussed with the student and their parent/carer to identify how best the college can support their individual needs. Any supporting evidence is utilised within this process.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

All full time students are assigned a Personal Tutor who provides pastoral support.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

The college supports students with a wide range of needs through its team of experienced and qualified staff. The college have a dedicated Autism and Deaf Co-ordinator who have particular expertise within these areas.

Alongside our mainstream courses we have two specialist supported learning programmes for students with identified learning difficulties and/or disabilities. The programmes are delivered in small groups by specialist staff within our purpose built Stansfeld Building at our Cauldwell Street campus.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Within the Additional Learning Support Team staff undertake regular training offered both in house and externally, alongside attending conferences and information events at national and local level. Many staff hold level 7 qualifications within the area of Special Educational Needs.

Staff utilise their training to support and train staff across the college to raise awareness and support good practice.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Activities, trips and work experience are all key components of any college course and as such there is an expectation that students will attend, alongside this there is a range of enrichment activities which students can choose to participate in. Where necessarily reasonable adjustments will be made.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

Where a student has an identified learning difficulty and/or disability the support the college is able to offer is discussed with the student and their parent/carer to identify how best the college can support their individual needs. Any supporting evidence is utilised within this process.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

Where a student does not have an EHCP the support that is available to students undertaking courses across the mainstream of the college includes:

  • Out of class group study support – this is one hour per week working with a tutor and 1 or 2 other students developing study skills
  • Up to 4.5 hours per week in class support at level 1
  • Exam arrangements
  • Access to the Haven at both our Bedford and Shuttleworth sites which is a quiet area for students to access outside of class

Where a student has an EHCP support is in accordance with their plan.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

All students have a Personal Tutor who is responsible for supporting students’ pastoral needs and is the first ‘port of call’.
